Nils began his athlete career as a swimmer but after ten years needed a change, that came in the form of triathlon in 2005. His early success confirmed his return to competitive sport and in 2008 represented Germany at the U23 World Cup and cemented his decision to turn professional.

He was a consistent performer on the ITU circuit for the next few years but 2011 was marred by injury. He rebounded in 2012 to win Ironman Arizona in his first attempt at the long distance and would now focus on the longer racing. He went on to win Ironman South Africa in 2014 and was second at DateV Challenge Roth.
